The person on the ledge.
The person on that ledge is Alex Honnold. He’s been announced the best free soloist (i.e., climbs without ropes) on the globe. The stunning picture above (posted to Reddit and tracked down to digital photographer Tim Kemple) reveals Mr. Honnold halfway up Half Dome, an amazingly challenging granite dome in Yosemite National Park 4,737 ft (1,444 m) above the valley floor. For us simple mortals this seems to be as absolute insanity. How can someone go up such amazingly challenging faces without a rope?
